GRE EXPERIMENTAL SECTION

Graduate Records Examination, popularly called as GRE, is a test conducted by ETS to analyze the capabilities of the test- takers to stand in the world's most accredited and reputed universities. In the world of novelty, even the GRE conductors accept the fact that living in the ideal manner is too main stream. The basic pattern of this test is framed in such a style that the applicants always face a surprise. Let's dwell on what I exactly mean by surprise.

As you all are familiar with the anatomy of GRE general test, you must be knowing that apart from Verbal Reasoning, Analytical Writing, and Quantitative Reasoning, there are two other sections whose score does not affect your overall performance; these two sections are 'Experimental' and 'Research.'

Please note that Paper-based GRE does not teach these additional sections.

What you understand by GRE Experimental Section?

This is the unknown surprise I was referring to in the first paragraph. Notable points of this section are:

  • It is reported to be a bit more complicated in comparison with the other articles. There's no accurate prediction over its difficulty level. Being thoroughly prepared is the only way to pass through this.'
  • Following Analytical writing is the Experimental section. .
  • It can be of the type of  Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning, i.e., it is presented as an experiment. So, instead of two verbal or quantitative sections, you might be presented with 3.
  • Don't think of skipping this section because you do not know which the 'Experimental' section is. There's no section marked or indicated this way. After all, this is how things are supposed to surprise you. Another advice, don't guess as to which section could be 'Experimental.'
  • No marks are allotted for this section, even if you hit perfect shots in each of the questions.

You also need to bear in mind the fact that there are three possibilities which can happen regarding these additional sections:

  • You'll be presented with an unidentified 'Experimental' section
  • You'll be given with an identified 'Research' section
  • Bingo! You have no additional sections to tackle. (Obviously, extremely less probability of this)

Purpose of this section:-

As the name itself suggests, experimentation. ETS tests its new question in this manner. They wish to see as to how the applicants' ability to handle the complexity of these further questions. Based on the response of the test- takers, ETS decides the difficulty level of questions and judge whether they match the set GRE standards or not. They are meant for future use.

Difference between 'Experimental' and 'Research' section:-

(Similarity: No marks will be awarded for both of these)

  • 1. The experimental section can be shown at any time after Analytical Writing. The end will always contain the Research.
  • 2. You have no means to identify and thereby skip the Experimental section. The research section is an identified one, and you have the right to skipping it if you want.
